How to Clean a Front-Load Washing Machine (and Get Rid of the Smell)

How to Clean a Front-Load Washing Machine (and Get Rid of the Smell)

Here's a question I get in Chicago homes more than almost any other: "Why does my washing machine smell, and why do my clean clothes come out smelling musty?" If you own a front-load washer, you already know the smell I mean — that sour, mildewy, gym-bag odor that seems to live inside the drum no matter how much detergent you pour in. In more than a decade of cleaning homes, I can tell you the culprit is almost always the same, and the fix is simpler than you'd think.

The short version: front-load washers are wonderfully efficient, but their tight door seal and cool, damp interior create a perfect little greenhouse for mold and mildew. The good news is that a front load washer that smells is a maintenance problem, not a broken appliance. Let me walk you through exactly how we clean one, and — just as important — how to keep the smell from ever coming back.

Why front-load washers smell in the first place

Top-load machines drain and dry out fairly well between uses. Front-loaders don't. They use less water, seal tight to prevent leaks, and trap moisture behind a big rubber door gasket. Add in leftover detergent, fabric softener, body oils, and lint, and you've essentially built a buffet for mildew that stays warm and wet in the dark.

The two biggest offenders I see over and over are the rubber door boot — the folded gasket that seals the door — and simple detergent overdosing. Both are easy to fix once you know where to look.

A few signs your washer is overdue for a cleaning: a musty or sour smell when you open the door, clothes that come out smelling worse than when they went in, visible black or pink specks on the gasket, or a slimy film in the detergent drawer. If you're nodding along to any of those, this routine will turn things around quickly.

What you'll need

You don't need a cabinet full of products. In fact, one of the most important rules here is about what NOT to combine. Gather:

Before we go a step further, here is the single most important safety rule in this entire article: never combine vinegar and bleach. Mixing an acid like vinegar with bleach releases toxic chlorine gas. Pick one cleaning agent for the whole job and stick with it. If you wiped the gasket with a diluted bleach solution, do not then run a vinegar cycle, and vice versa. When in doubt, use plain white vinegar OR a dedicated washer tablet and leave the bleach in the closet.

Step 1: Clean the rubber door gasket (this is where the smell lives)

If you only do one thing, do this. Pull the washer door fully open and look at the rubber boot that seals it. Now gently peel back the folds of that gasket with your fingers. Nine times out of ten, this is where you'll find the black, slimy mildew that's been perfuming your laundry — hidden in the crevice where water, hair, and lint collect and never dry.

Mix a 1:1 solution of water and white vinegar in your bowl, dampen a microfiber cloth, and wipe the entire gasket, working the cloth into every fold. Use the toothbrush to scrub the grimy pockets and to fish out any coins, socks, or bobby pins hiding down there. For stubborn black spots, you can instead use a diluted bleach solution on a cloth — but remember the rule: use vinegar OR bleach, never both. Whichever you choose, wipe the whole area, then go back over it with a fresh damp cloth and dry it thoroughly.

That mildew, by the way, isn't just a smell issue — it's a moisture issue, and moisture is what feeds mold throughout a home. If you're battling musty odors in more than just your laundry, our guide on mold and your health and controlling moisture explains why drying things out beats scrubbing every time.

Step 2: Run a "clean washer" or "tub clean" cycle

Most front-loaders made in the last decade have a dedicated Clean Washer or Tub Clean cycle. This runs a long, hot wash with an empty drum to flush out the buildup you can't reach by hand. If your machine has this cycle, use it. If not, just select the hottest, longest normal cycle you have.

Add your cleaning agent to the empty drum:

Once again — and I'll keep saying it because it matters — never combine vinegar and bleach in the same cycle. Choose one. Run the cycle to completion. If your smell is severe, run a second hot cycle with a fresh dose of the same product. When it finishes, leave the door open so the drum can air out.

Step 3: Clean the detergent dispenser drawer

Pull out the detergent dispenser drawer completely — most slide out fully once you press a release tab in the middle. You'll usually find a slimy pink or gray film of old softener and detergent caked in the corners. Soak the drawer in warm water, scrub it with the toothbrush, and clean the empty cavity it slides into as well, since mildew grows up in the roof of that slot too. Dry it and slide it back.

Step 4: Clean the drain-pump filter

This is the step almost everyone skips, and it's a big one. At the bottom-front of most front-load washers is a small hatch or kickplate. Behind it sits the drain-pump filter — a trap that catches coins, lint, hair, and gunk before they clog the pump. When it's full, water sits stagnant and your machine smells even after you've cleaned everything else.

Here's how to do it without flooding your floor:

Check your owner's manual for the exact location, but nearly every front-loader has one. Cleaning it a few times a year makes a real difference.

The two habits that keep the smell gone for good

Cleaning the machine is only half the battle. If you go right back to the habits that caused the smell, it'll return in a month. In the thousands of Chicago homes we've cleaned, the two prevention steps below are what separate a fresh-smelling washer from a musty one.

Use only HE detergent, in the correct dose

Front-loaders require high-efficiency (HE) detergent, which is low-sudsing by design. Regular detergent produces too many suds for these machines to rinse away, and that leftover residue is exactly what mildew feeds on. Just as important: overdosing detergent feeds the smell. More soap does not equal cleaner clothes — it means more residue trapped in the drum, the gasket, and the dispenser. Use the smallest recommended amount, and if your water is soft or your loads are lightly soiled, use even less.

If your clothes have been coming out stiff or dingy, hard water may be compounding the problem by leaving mineral deposits behind. Chicago-area water has its quirks, which we get into in our post on whether Chicago has hard water.

Leave the door and dispenser ajar between loads

This is the golden rule, and it's free. Leave the washer door and the detergent dispenser drawer ajar between loads so the drum can dry out completely. A dry drum can't grow mold, period. That single habit does more to prevent odor than any cleaning product on the market. If you have young kids or pets, prop the door open only when it's safe to do so, but otherwise, make it automatic — the moment the load comes out, crack the door.

A quick word on your laundry routine

A clean machine is the foundation of clean laundry, but the rest of your routine matters too. Washing bedding and towels on the right schedule and at the right temperature keeps them fresh and cuts down on the allergens that build up in fabric. Our guide on how often you should wash your sheets pairs perfectly with a freshly cleaned washer, and if anyone in your home deals with allergies, our tips on reducing dust mites and allergens are worth a read — hot washing is a big part of the strategy.

How often should you do all this?

For most households, running a clean-washer cycle once a month and wiping the gasket weekly keeps odors from ever taking hold. Clean the dispenser drawer every month or two, and check the drain-pump filter a few times a year. If you run a lot of heavy or dirty loads, lean toward the more frequent end. It's a fifteen-minute routine that saves you from re-washing clothes that never smell quite right.
